In the Middle Ages, a smeltery was built in Garphyttan by Germans. They were called “Garpar” from the old Swedish word “Garp” for German. The Swedish word for smeltery is “hytta” = Garphyttan.
Garphyttan was built around Garphytte Bruk, over the years a variety of activities took place, from silver mining to nail production.
